Starflyer 59
"What's cool?" asks Starflyer 59 vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Jason Martin. "AmI cool? Is this album cool? Would it be cooler if it had a bunch of trumpets? I really don't know anymore." These are the ironic questions behind Starflyer's sixth album (if you include their two EPs), The Fashion Focus, on Tooth and Nail Records. Martin has always had an identity which rarely fits into the norm. Raised in Orange County, Martin purchased import singles from bands like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride while his peers obsessed over local punk. As a result of Martin's regionally-peculiar influences, Starflyer released a stellar debut album in 1993 which featured fat, noisy guitar revolutions and beautiful fuzz-pop vocals. In the years and records that followed, Starflyer continued to evolve their sound while retaining an original edge which made the band a favorite with the critics.

With The Fashion Focus, Starflyer moves forward again with another dash of innovative style. The album features the most minimal guitar work on any Starflyer album, leaving more breathing room for the undeniable vocal hooks and the occasional organ riff. The album also reflects a more contemporary British flavor in the spirit of bands like Radiohead and Verve, yet never sounding like any band in particular other than an evolved reflection of Starflyer itself.

Martin comments, "I'm into bands like Blur and Suade who give the listener a big variety of styles and influcences. These types of bands inspired me to give the new Starflyer album more dimension and diversity in its sound. We also made the album different by using less guitars, with some songs only having a single guitar track. It was tough not doubling everything, because I had to make sure that I played all the guitar tracks really well."

As with previous records, Fashion Focus should be a winner with the critics and an instant hit with new and old fans alike. So as Starflyer continues pondering whether or not they are cool, their dedicated listeners will continue to become all the more hip.
