Katinas, The
"If there had to be a theme to the music of this album it would definitely be family," says Joe Katina, as he references to an old spiritual, "Whether we are together or apart the circle will never be broken." For this family of 12 siblings, five of which make up Gotee Records artist The Katinas, family is going to be a constant.

These five brothers from American Samoa signed with Gotee Records in early 1997. Now with their self-titled full length debut, Gotee Records president Joey Elwood is optimistic, "The Katinas are going to change the rules of what Christian music can be and where it can be sold. Whether it is black, white, young, old, Christian, non-Christian, these guys have no boundaries. That, I think is very unique," says Elwood. With over 125 tour dates and 350,000 concert goers, the last year has produced nothing but great results for The Katinas. Elwood continues, "I've never seen the market more ready for a new release."

Since 1977 the young Katina boys have performed at youth conventions, high schools and churches. In recent years The Katinas have performed with artists R. Kelly, CeCe Winans, Michael Bolton, Amy Grant, Wynnona and Jasmine Guy. They toured the country with the 1998 E.R.A.C.E. (Eliminating Racism And Creating Equality) Tour where they shared the stage with dcTalk, Out of Eden, Jennifer Knapp and Temple Yard.

With their release strongly grounded in mature musical roots, the five brothers are reminiscent of such performers as Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, BeBe & CeCe Winans and the Ohio Players. Both in style of their music and demand for their performance, The Katinas bring a multi-cultural, multi-generational and multi-denominational span to music lovers with an appeal equivalent to their peer group Blackstreet, Jodeci, Aaron Hall and the Gap Band.

Highlights from the album are reflective of the Katinas live performances. Songs like "Takin' Me Higher," "The Circle" and "So Good" offer concert goers a high energy ticket while songs like "Mama" and "The Other Side" bring the passionate side of the Katinas into focus.

The reassurance in "There You Are" is magnified on the level of faith at the close of the album with "You Are God." The song, in essence, acts as a parallel to some life experiences for The Katinas in recent years. "Losing our mom, then uprooting from our home land to begin our musical career," Sam remembers, "there was so much uncertainty." During this time he recalls an interview that actually inspired the writing of the song, "It was a segment essentially about God and people's interpretation of who God is. They used examples like Joan Osborne trying to imagine God in everyday circumstances with her song "One of Us," and Dishwalla asking "tell me all your thoughts on God," in their hit "Counting Blue Cars," and Bette Midler's comforting lyrics "God is watching us from a distance." "You Are God" was our opportunity to be bold in our expression of who our God is."
